Blaise Agüera y Arcas: What Is Intelligence?
A review of What Is Life?: Evolution by Computation, and What Is Intelligence?: Lessons from AI about Evolution, Computing, and Minds, by Blaise Agüera y Arcas
A conversation about human values, how they form, how they change, and why trying to encode them in algorithms is so difficult, if not impossible.
As Silicon Valley lunges towards creating AI that is considered superior to humans (at times called Artificial General Intelligence or Super-intelligent AI), it does so with the premise that it is possible to encode values in AI so that the AI won’t harm us. But values are individual, elusive, and ever-changing. They resist being mathematized.
Join us as we discuss human values, how they form, how they change, and why trying to encode them in algorithms is so difficult, if not impossible.
